WEST CARROLLTON -- The city of West Carrollton is pushing bard to hike income tax rates.
West Carrollton wants voters to approve a .25% income tax hike on the May ballot. City officials held an informational meeting Monday to explain why the city is in need of the extra money.
The city says it's lost more than $670,000 in revenue since the Appleton Paper plant closed. Officials say the income tax hike is necessary in order to maintain services like police and fire protection and trash pick-up.
''We understand families are struggling just like we are.'', Tim Reilly, West Carollton's finance director told us, ''It's not going to be an easy decision, but this is the best alternative.''
Reilly says the income tax hike will affect about 40% of West Carrollton residents because the majority of residents do not work in the city. So for a worker making $40,000/year the increase would mean shelling out an extra $100 in income taxes.
