DAYTON -- Miami Valley Hospital announced it will no longer perform transplants.
The hospital Board of Directors made that decision Tuesday night. Transplants have not been a big specialty at Miami Valley. In fact, last year they only performed only about half as many as some other local hospitals.
The board says the hospital would actually have to spend more than a million dollars just to meet program mandates. The hospital will now change its focus to organ donation.
"If we want to focus on anything to grow programs and make availability for patients better, we should be focusing on the Donate Life organ program and procurement process in this community," said Bobbie Gerhart, President of Miami Valley Hospital.
Patients who are now waiting for a transplant will transfer to other regional medical centers like The Ohio State University and the University of Cincinnati to get their treatment.
