MIDDLETOWN -- The pilot in Monday night's plane crash is still recovering in the hospital.
The passenger in a plane crash was checked out and released from the hospital, and talked to ABC 22/FOX 45's Chelby Kosto about
his few minutes of extreme terror, as the plane plummeted to Earth.
"Were you scared when the plane was coming down?" Kosto asked. "Oh yeah, I was scared!" Tom Duncan said.
Duncan went flying with his good friend Doug Morgan on Monday night. The two went up for a simple flight and were planning on returning to Hook Field in Middletown, but they started to run low on fuel.
"The engine started sputtering, and then it went out. We knew we were in trouble," Duncan said.
Duncan said Morgan didn't want to land on the highway, for fear of hurting someone else, so he picked a field near I-675 and I-75, and they landed in the thick brush.
"I think the brush is what saved us," he said.
After they crashed, Duncan said Morgan was in pretty bad shape.
"He was hurting. I could hear the sirens, but they couldn't find us," Duncan said.
He decided to go find help but he has cerebral palsy and can't walk well, so he crawled his way through the brush to get to the highway.
"Every 10 to 15 feet I hollered 'Help, help!' And one of the patrolmen heard me," Duncan said.
With only a small scratch on his face, Duncan said he feels lucky.
"The scratch is the worst of it. It's hard for me to walk anyway, and I think I did myself more damage walking out to get help than I did in the actual crash."
Duncan credits Morgan, who he calls an "experienced pilot" for saving their lives.
"I feel like he did a real good job," Duncan said.
Troopers from the Ohio Sate Highway Patrol said they are investigating whether alcohol played a part in the crash, and are still waiting for toxicology tests from the hospital.
Duncan said he believes his friend was sober for the flight, and wouldn't have gone flying with him if he had been drinking.
