Turner in Washington Trying to Gauge Sequester's Effect on Military

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Rep. Mike Turner spoke with ABC 22/FOX 45 Anchors Meghan Mongillo and Jackie Couture this morning on the day the sequestration takes effect.

Turner said the sequester was designed never to happen. It was a White House plan to be irresponsible, indiscriminate and absolutely unacceptable, so Congress would never allow it to happen. Yet that's exactly where we are today.

Turner said he did not vote for sequestration.

While other Congressmen are leaving Washington, Turner said he is staying in D.C., working with the chairman of the Armed Services Committee to see how these cuts will affect the military.

"Even though these cuts have been scheduled to go into place since the president proposed them in August 2011 he has prohibited the Department of Defense from doing any planning for those cuts," Turner said. "So it's hard for us to tell the country or for even the Department of Defense to tell us what affects will be happening."

"We're just beginning to get a picture of what will be thousands of furloughs at Wright-Patt Air Force Base," Turner said.

ABC 22/FOX 45 will bring you the latest developments on sequestration today and in the days to come.
