School Sends Home 'Fat Letters' with Students, Parents Furious

NORTH ANDOVER, MA -- They're being called 'fat letters' -- notes mailed home from schools in North Andover, Massachusetts, to alert parents that their child qualifies as obese.

Matt Watson's son, Cameron, got one of these letters, even though he's an active athlete. Watson believes the letters are a waste. He says, 'No one wants to get a letter being told they are obese. That's a very strong, uncomfortable word and we just don't see it fitting our son.'

The Massachusetts Department of Health oversees the letters. A spokesperson says they also send letters to parents of students who are underweight.

Parents also have the option of not having their children screened for their body mass index.
