SPECIAL REPORT: Best Way To Sell Old Gold

MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- With gold prices hovering at record levels, a record number of people in  the Miami Valley are selling old gold jewelery they seldom wear. But what's the best way to do that?

We got advice from local authorities and also from Kiplinger, the financial advice website and magazine.

They warn you to be very wary of sending your jewelry off in the mail to places that promise to pay you. Sometimes you won't get a check, or the return of your gold, but more often you just can't be sure of getting the best price.

The same is true for gold parties. The person hosting the party usually takes a percentage of the price. And again, there no comparison shopping.

Instead -- especially because our Gem City boasts the highest concentration of jewelry stores in Ohio -- find a reputable local dealer.

John Stafford of Dayton's Stafford Jewelers shows all the tests his staff uses to test the purity and weight of gold. Note that they also pay by check, to discourage people who come by gold in an underhanded way.
