The Dangers of Ice Accumulation

MONTGOMERY COUNTY -- As most drivers know, trying to maneuver on icy roads is a lot different than trying to drive on snowy roads.  Meteorologist Chris Mulcahy has a warning about what to expect, depending on how much ice we get.

Ice is more dangerous because you can't see it, snow is a very visible cue to slow down if you're driving.

Any accumulation of ice up to one-tenth of an inch can be a nuisance, it will make sidewalks slippery and a walking hazard, slick spots will develop on the roads and bridges will become icy.  The good news is on most roads, since they're not perfectly smooth, your tires will have some friction to stop.

Now, a tenth to a quarter of an inch of ice is disruptive.  The ice will start to become more widespread on trees, cars and windshields, and bridges are now very icy.

A quarter to a half inch of ice is very hazardous.  Everything is now icy, breaking tree limbs and causing power outages.

Finally, anything over a half inch is plain crippling, power outages become widespread and road become impassable.
