DAYTON -- We were surprised to find out... There's a website that is specifically designed to create fake girlfriends... And people pay for texts, phone calls and social media interactions from those phony significant others!
"That sounds kind of sad," said Joe Snyder of Dayton. "Kind of depressing the people would pay for that service."
"Why would I want to have that done to myself," said Dale Montgomery of Dayton.
"How different is this from creating invisible farms or invisible Mafia Wars," WSU Communications professor Melissa Spirek said. She says several of her students have admitted to creating fake girlfriends. They do it to get out of a commitment or to maybe get their parents off their back, or the most common reason:
"Maybe they're using it to make your wife or girlfriend jealous if that's the case good luck to them," said Snyder.
This website does everything they can to give you the real experience of having a girlfriend. They'll create fake social media accounts of her, and have her call you twice a month so you can publicly show off to your friends and she'll even text you 10 times a month. The only thing she won't do is show up.
It's not cheap. You just have to be willing to cough up $250 per month for at minimum of three months.
"It seems to be cheaper than an escort service where you rent a girl to go to an event and that's only for one night verses a number of months," said Spirek.
Spirek says sites like this go through a cycle.
"Concern, shock, acceptance and then on going development," she said.
She fears the ongoing development will include people taking this to the next level with not just invisible partners, but invisible children and families.
The site says they are now hiring women to play the part of the invisible girlfriend. The job pays $10 an hour. Right now they don't offer services for fake boyfriends.
