EVANSVILLE, IND.--Vectren is warning customers of a multi-state bill payment scam.
The company reports that customers are receiving an unsolicited phone calls from a fraudulent individual claiming to be a representative for Vectren.
The fraudulent individual states that the customerâs utility service will be disconnected if the customer doesn't pay immediately; usually within an hour.
To make the payment, customers are told to purchase a prepaid debit card from a local store and call the scam artist back.
The customer is then asked to provide the receipt number and PIN number from the prepaid debit card, instantly giving them access to the card's funds.
Vectren says they do not accept prepaid credit or debit cards for payment and would never require a customer to purchase one in order to make a payment of any type.
Customers are asked to call Vectrenâs customer service operations at 800-227-1376 if anyone calls or shows up at their door claiming to represent Vectren and is asking for personal or payment information.
