DAYTON -- The falling temperatures and snow we experienced all night Tuesday have definitely created slick conditions on the roads.
At one point police were describing the downtown streets as a sheet of ice. They were calling for salt trucks to come out immediately. The salt barn was definitely busy. Trucks were leaving and coming back to refill every few minutes.
We wanted to know just how bad the roads were so you and your family can stay safe if you're out and about. ABC22/FOX45 Reporter Liza Danver drove on the interstate, main roads and side streets. She found the highways were fine, main roads such as Wilmington, Wyoming and Wayne had some slick spots. But salt trucks were treating those areas. The side streets are where you want to be careful. Most were not treated and were covered in light snow, which made it difficult to see any ice on the road. Of course the icy roads were all due to the significant temperature drop.
"That's the crazy thing. It was raining this morning and now it's ice," said Nick Shelter of Evansville.
"Yesterday, it was 50. It's a little colder today, but it's Ohio!" said Kenny Danks of Dayton.
What you need to know for your morning commute is to drive slow and be careful on your neighborhood streets, because the salt trucks probably won't be able to get to those roads by the time you leave for work or school.
