DAYTON--A small memorial marks the spot where a home once stood on N. Kilmer street.
Michael Jones lives across the street and saw smoke coming from the house and heard crys for help.

I could hear Evelyn the grandmother of Michael Shorter screaming help me I got my grandbaby help help."

Jones didn't hesitate. He knew he had to help. "I couldn't go around the front there was already fire coming out."

So he ran to the back. "I grabbed the grandmother, I reached for the grandbaby by his leg but my grip slipped."
The four month old Michael Shorter didn't not survive...Michael Jones who almost saved him says he still hurts although he knows did all he could. "Me as a person I feel bad because I couldn't save the baby I still beat myself up about it."

Jones decided to turn his pain into action. He and mom Renee Jones Blevins are now asking anyone and everyone they talk too help pay for the baby's funeral and to help both families including delores hall whose home was also destroyed by the fire. Blevins is accepting donations on the families behalf. "You can drop things off at my residence for her also for the shorter family you can also drop things off for their family we will accept anything the communnity can offer them."

"If anyone wants to donate go the House of Wheat and drop it off and we are doing his for a reason cause we care for our neighbors, said Michael Jones.

The grandmother, Evelyn Shorter has been released from the hospital and is recovering. The Red Cross is helping both families with a place to stay.

Anyone who wants to help the family can make a monetary donation to the House of Wheat Funeral Home in the name of Michael Shorter.
