VANDALIA -- While most school districts saw zero increase, Vandalia saw a 58 percent increase, according to Gov. John Kasich's 2014-2015 budget proposal.

"Usually they're cutting funding so it is good to hear that they are trying to increase it. I know Vandalia and everyone around here is trying to pass levees and is having trouble doing that," said Paul Courtney of Vandalia.

Like many districts in Ohio since 2009, Vandalia-Butler has seen a steady revenue decline and voters turned down its last three levy requests. Recent budget cuts have included job reductions, busing services and the closure of a school building.

"I'm proud of the fact they work so hard and so long do this hard economic times and they didn't give up," said Bobbi Barnett of Vandalia.

The governor's proposed 58 percent increase for Vandalia-Butler Schools is the highest in the Miami Valley.

This year Vandalia is set to receive $3.1 million  from the state. If the 58 percent increase goes through next year they will get $4.9 million. So ABC 22/FOX 45 asked parents what they would like to see that money go toward.

"The field trip and also busing. Busing has been a big problem. A lot of kids have to walk back and forth between school and there are no sidewalks," said Barnett.

"Bus service, because I'm here to pick up my daughter and she would be able to ride the bus home if it weren't for that," said Courtney.

"Making sure to keep the Honors Program, the band; taking care of those things would be huge for the community. The school has always been an excellent school and now we can get better."

Schools like Vandalia that will see a large increase can thank new funding formulas that consider increases in student enrollment, resident's income levels and home valuations

Vandalia is currently facing a $7 million deficit and didn't tell us where exactly the extra money would go but they did release this statement:

"We are cautiously optimistic, but these are just preliminary numbers. We are digging in and analyzing the data, but the numbers could very well change before they are finalized."
