DAYTON -- A man who told police he had been shot trying to break up a fight was later charged when officers found out he had shot himself.
Calvin L. Wiggins Jr., 23, arrived early Sunday morning at Miami Valley Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg. Originally, police said he told them he tried to break up a fight near the intersection of Santa Clara Avenue and Richmond Avenue.
Police checked Wiggins' injury and the holes in his pants, which they said were consistent with a self-inflicted wound when a gun is fired from a pocket.
When confronted by this, and the penalty for filing a false police report, Wiggins changed his story and admitted to shooting himself while moving the gun from his waistband to pocket while walking in Desoto Bass Courts housing complex.
Wiggins had been convicted in 2007 and 2008 of burglary and drug charges, which prevents him from legally carrying a firearm. He was charged with Having Weapons While Under Disability.
