FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- You might not think a teenager being booked into jail would be eager to help out a cop. But when this troubled teen saw his arresting officer collapse, the young man took action.
It was all caught on video.
It isn't often you see a teenager who has been arrested, smiling with a bunch of police officers, but that's what happened late last year.
The story began Sept. 10. Cameras inside the Fort Lauderdale police booking facility show that teen, 17-year-old Jamal Rutledge in handcuffs, while Officer Frankin Foulks processes him.
Suddenly, Officer Foulks collapses and falls out of his chair and onto the floor. Rutledge, still in handcuffs, starts yelling.
He gets up to check on Officer Foulks, who police say lost consciousness. Rutlege yells out the door for help and two more officers respond. They administer CPR and eventually take Foulks to the hospital.
Doctors say had it not been for the teen, and the quick work of these police officers, Foulks could have died.
So for this day, these unlikely allies can smile and they'll be honored later this month by the city.
Jamal Rutlege was in jail for a probation violation. He initially had been arrested for burglary and criminal mischief. As for Officer Foulks, he is feeling great -- and hopes to return to full duty later this month.
