Burglary Suspect "Butt Dials" 9-1-1, Cell Phone Leads Deputies Right to Him

SIDNEY -- A burglary suspect "butt dials" 9-1-1 Wednesday evening as he was breaking into a home, which led to his quick and easy arrest, Shelby County Sheriff John Lenhart said.

The sheriff said Douglas J. Wolaver, 40, was breaking a window of a home when his phone inadvertently dialed the authorities. The 9-1-1 dispatcher figured out what was happening and quickly determined the phone's location.

Deputies responded to the address, which the Sheriff's Office did not release, and found a window had been forced open and entry to the residence was made by one or more suspects.

Lenhart said deputies had another clue about the suspect's location because Wolaver's cell phone was beeping because of a low battery, which led them to his hiding place inside the home.

Lenhart said, jokingly, that the last time his deputies had to work this hard to solve a burglary is when a suspect left his wallet behind.

"The Sheriff's Office appreciates the technology available to the dispatch centers here in Shelby County that allows us to not only locate the public when emergencies arise but also when burglars call 9-1-1 while in the act of committing their crime," Lenhart said.

Wolaver is charged with breaking and entering.
