Officer Injured, Civilian Killed During Pursuit in Columbus Suburb

WHITEHALL -- A Whitehall Police Officer was seriously hurt and a civilian was killed in an accident while the officer responded to a pursuit of a dangerous suspect during the early morning of November 30.

According to Fraternal Order of Police president Jim Gilbert, the officer suffered multiple broken bones and was listed in critical condition.

The accident happened in front of Ernie's Complete Automotive Service, 3906 East Main Street in Whitehall. Cars parked on the lot there were heavily damaged, and the sign for the business was sheered off.

Gilbert says the officer was responding to a pursuit when the accident happened. He added the other vehicle involved was not a part of that pursuit.

The pursuit itself was sparked by a domestic situation. According to Gilbert, the man involved in that altercation was making threats, including threatening to "shoot it out" with police.

That man got away, and information regarding his identity and the type of vehicle he was driving has not been released by Whitehall Police at this time.

The entire incident remains under investigation.
