UNDATED -- A local woman who's been on both ends of a gun barrel now sees both sides of the gun debate.
Phyllis Uzzel was home alone one night at her Tipp City home when the doorbell rang. Answering it, she found a revolver aimed at her head. The home invader made off with all the money she had at home. And Phyllis vowed never to be defenseless again.
She and her husband both received training at Miami Valley Shooting Grounds, eight hours in a classroom and five hours on the shooting range. Phyllis now has a gun she says her grandchildren can't find, but one that protects them and herself.
Nevertheless, Phyllis does not believe all guns should be available for sale. Some, she says, "can go a little overboard." And she also believes in universal background checks.
Toby Hoover agrees. Toby is a founder of the Ohio Coalition Against Gun violence. Her husband was a victim of gun violence. She stresses that she believes in the Second Amendment. And she believes our "culture of violence" contributes to shootings.
But the man who taught Phyllis how to handle a gun disagrees with her on key issues. Dana Tackett owns the Miami Valley Shooting Grounds and, as a Vietnam veteran, he believes Americans at home are entitles to the same protection he had in the field.
