WEST CARROLLTON -- Michael Edward Fischer, 42, has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for robbing a pharmacy then firing an AK-47 at an officer in 2011.

Fischer of West Carrollton received the maximum sentence after his convictions from aggravated robbery, felonious assault and kidnapping charges.

According to Montgomery County Prosecutor Mat Heck Jr. Fischer on October 8, 2011, entered the Walgreen's on Springboro Pike armed with an assault rifle and robbed the pharmacy of prescription pain medication.

The defendant fired a shot at one of the employees inside the pharmacy, Heck said. When a Miami Township Police Officer arrived at the Walgreen’s on a report of a robbery in progress, Heck said Fischer exited the store armed with an AK‐47 and opened fire at the officer, striking his cruiser several times. The officer was able to escape being shot, and returned fire, striking Fischer.

Fischer remained hospitalized until April 6, 2012, at which time he was jailed. He was then found guilty as charged January 14 of aggravated robbery, felonious assault, kidnapping, vandalism of government property and felonious assault on a police officer.

“We are pleased this violent defendant will be incarcerated and removed from society for the maximum period of time, as we requested," Heck said. "I want to commend Miami Township Police Officer David Ooten for his quick thinking, good judgment and actions in preventing this defendant from escaping and injuring or killing innocent citizens.”
