DAYTON -- The gun debate is not just about guns, it is about your right to self-defense. We know not everyone is comfortable with owning a handgun but, at the same time you want to feel safe and protected.
Lucia Sidler walks to classes alone almost every day at the University of Dayton. She says for the most part she feels safe
"I usually keep my keys between my hands, that's like a trick my mom taught me growing up," said Sidler.
But, for the young college student, is that really enough to feel safe? Like Sidler, not everyone wants a gun.
"I don't know where to find pepper spray I guess," she said.
We found out it's not as easy to find pepper spray as you would think. David's Uniforms in Dayton sells pepper spray. The chemicals used today in pepper spray are very scientific and effective.
"It has military tear gas, plus ultra violet dye, when you spray it, they will actually glow under a black light that police have," said David Duberstein, owner of David's Uniforms.
Despite what many think, Walmart does not carry pepper spray.
However, we did find that Cabelas and Dick's carries it.
We also found it is almost easier to find gun stores in the area than places selling pepper spray.
It could be because of liability.
"I can't say why guns would be more easy to get, it's the same firearm catalogs that we order mace, so it'd be up the owner," said Lonnie Wilkey, owner of The One Stop Gun Shop in Dayton.
There are also stun guns, but even those are hard to find mainly because of the price.
The Dayton Police Department wants people to find other self-defense alternatives. They offer free classes to groups and organizations. They can be reached at 937-333-1184.
